Topic: Welcome

We are excited to start another great year! Here is some information as we get ready for the first day of school August 8th!

NO CELL PHONE POLICY: This summer, the Louisiana governor signed Act 313, a law banning student use of cell phones during school hours in public schools. The law goes into effect on Day 1 of the school year and stipulates that any phones brought to a high school campus must be POWERED OFF and stowed away during instructional hours. That means that as soon as students arrive on campus, they MUST turn off and store their cell phones in a backpack or their vehicles. Devices CANNOT be accessed by students before school, during lunch, in between classes, in the restroom or during class. Students found in violation will have their device confiscated. Habitual offenders are subject to additional discipline consequences. A parent may retrieve the device from the office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30-2:30 ONLY, and there is a $10 administrative fee.

Parents, this new law will require parents and guardians to make some minor adjustments as well. If you need to contact your child during the school day in the case of an emergency, please call the front office and we will be glad to assist you. We ask that you refrain from calling the office for matters that can wait until your child arrives home. Your student will have access to his/her laptop during the school day as usual. Please note that students will be able to use their cellular devices during after-school activities.

Please help your student with this transition by discussing with them the benefits of this new policy. We fully expect our students to be more engaged in their classes without the distraction of constant messaging and social media. We also anticipate that students will soon begin to experience the benefits of reduced time on social media/cell phones, including a reduction in stress, anxiety, fear of missing out and body image concerns. Overall, we hope this new policy helps our students develop new, healthy habits that improve their quality of life overall.

A few points of interest:

The morning bell rings at 7:30 and the tardy bell rings at 7:35.

Students cannot be dropped off before 7:00.  Adult supervision of students is an issue before this time.

If a student is more than 5 minutes late, he/she should report to the attendance office.  It is not necessary for you to escort them inside as they can sign themselves in.

Students who ride a bus or drive are dismissed at 1:25. Car riders are dismissed at 1:30. This allows our buses to leave our campus in a timely manner so that they are not late for their primary routes. If a student leaves on the bus bell, and does not report to the buses, he/she will receive behavior consequences.

Student Handbook – The district handbook can be found at www.apsb.org. Please familiarize yourself with our policies and procedures.

We are looking forward to another fantastic year at APPLe and encourage and welcome you and your family to be a part of it. Thank you for your continued support.
